Another record has been set at China’s Spring Auctions. An ancient Chinese Painting from the Yuan Dynasty, of some 600 years ago, was sold for more than 400 million yuan. That’s the highest price out of all ancient paintings sold at auctions in China so far this year.

The picture, “Zhichuan Relocating” is a masterpiece of Wang Meng, one of the four great masters of the Yuan Dynasty. Their landscape paintings represent a peak in Chinese art history and have had great influence on later generations.

Yet few of their works have been handed down or preserved. The initial bid was 110 million yuan, after merely 15 minutes and 19-round bids, the painting’s hammer price was 350 million yuan, and it was finally sold at 402.5 million yuan including the commission.
